Treatment
Physical Therapy treatment deals with the restoration of movement in the body and attempts to normalize the body’s ability to control movement efficiently in order to accomplish functional patterns. When range of motion and neuro-motor control is maximal, the body is better capable of completing tasks by successfully integrating stability and mobility. This results in greater energy efficiency during functional tasks and reduced stress on the body tissues.

Physical Therapy is a movement based treatment paradigm. Generally, when tissues of the body undergo stress, the body responds by producing an elevated level of inflammation in order to repair any damage. This response may influence the normal motion quality and/or quantity within the involved area. In the presence of pain/swelling, the body may adopt alternative movement strategies or reduce the volume of movement during the healing stages. In advanced cases, the result is generally loss of motion and tissue stiffness. Patients who benefit from Physical Therapy treatment frequently present with the following signs and symptoms:
  • Localized pain or pain in a radiating pattern
  • Loss of range of motion
  • Pain reproduction with specific motions
  • Guarded motion patterns
  • Gait deviations
  • Presence of altered vertical position of the spine (listing)
  • Presence of altered curvature of the spine (Scoliosis)
  • Poor motion control
  • Poor ability to change positions
  • Excessive weakness in the trunk or extremities

Treatment is commonly necessary following an injury or a surgery when the body needs assistance in healing. Treatment may include anti-pain and/or anti-inflammatory measures, passive motion or mobilization, active movement re-education or resisted exercise training. The type of treatment depends on the stage and severity of your condition and your Physical Therapist is well educated in determining its appropriateness.

Treatment begins with a comprehensive evaluation which includes a review of your medical history, history of your injury or pain and a structural exam. Based on the clinical findings from your evaluation, the therapist will develop a treatment plan to assist you in your recovery and get you back on tract to function. Commonly your therapist will communicate with your physician to ensure a concerted effort of medical information and Physical Therapy treatment.
